My boyfriend told me that he’s interested in joining the Naval Reserves, last night. I’ve been a complete wreck since. I need information about the reserves, how they work, how they are different from the active forces, the chances of being deployed, will he be able to do the job he wants to, how can one be deployed if they only do 1 weekend a month? He’s 25 with a college degree in marketing but has been out of work the past 2 months. He wants to do Media Relations work at the base in the city where we live. Apparently he thinks he’s just going to walk in to this position at this particular base with no risk of being deployed. After talking with several people at work today, they’ve stated that this is def not the case. They said that recruiters will say anything you want to hear to get you in the door but it’s never true afterwards. I was also told that reserves are the first to go overseas to Iraq and the like. Can somebody please provide me with accurate info? I’m a crying mess!

Well let me be the first to say, yes there is a very good chance he will get deployed at some time during his tour. I was in the Navy Reserve for eight years and once Desert Storm kicked off my unit was called up almost immediatly. Now the only thing that might delay his deployment is the type of unit he will be assigned too. My unit’s primary function was in logistics, that is probably one of the most important things in trying to fight a war. If his unit has some other type of primary purpose then he stands a better chance of not getting deployed as soon. I am sitting right now in Afghanistan and i see it every day where reservest from all the different branches didn’t think they were going to be deployed and yet here they sit next to me in the dining facility. In his defence though if you two are serious I think you need to show support to your boyfriend and at least be willing to listen and entertain the idea of him joining the military.

I was interested in joining the navy reserves also and I talked to a recruiter and all that. Yeah, she told me that I wouldn’t be going to Iraq because I have small children at home. But I hear a totally different story from people who were in the reserves that say recruiters will tell you anything to get you to join and once your in you cannot back out, and that yes, you most definately will be sent to Iraq. Everyone I talked to about this was either in the military or was in the past and all told me the same thing. And none of these people knew each other. I decided not to join. If he goes he should expect to get deployed and make his decision knowing that. If he doesn’t get deployed right now, he will someday. I still think that you should support him regardless. No one wants their boyfriend leaving them, but it’s worse for someone to go who doesn’t have support at home.

he is mistaken. first off, there has to be a need for what rating he wants at the Reserve station.. and if they don’t have any use for an MC, he will NOT be getting MC.
the reserves is a little different.. you only get to choose from what that particular station needs or uses, you don’t get to choose your rating and then get stationed whwere you are needed, as the Actiove side does things.
secondly. he WILL be deployed. end of subject. EVERYBODY deploys. and he can be called up for a year to do it, too. and he may not necessarily be deployiing as his rating either..The Navy and the NR is currently sending alot of individuals on deployments to the sandbox to ease the starin on the Army.
