Public Relations Degree for Sports Information?

I’m currently a freshman student majoring in sports management. I am looking at possibly transferring to a bigger university next semester and I was wondering about possibly changing my major to Journalism/Public Relations. Would that be a good fit for someone looking to pursue a career in Sports Information?

Yes, but getting a job in sports journalism/PR is almost impossible. You have to have loads (years) of experience!

What Molly is saying is not necessarily true.

If you want to be in Sports Information, the correct major would certainly be in the Mass Communications/Journalism/Public Relations field, because you must know how to write. I would suggest that while you are in college you do everything you can to learn the process of how everything works, and even when you graduate, you still must do tons of internships. I might add that going to a bigger school won’t make much difference.

It is extremely hard to get a job in this field. In the pros, the players make ALL the money. And in college, they have to deal with budgets. So you must do alot of internships and hope that you get your big break.

In this business, it is more about who you know, than it is about what college you went to or how much experience you have. So you kind of have to sit around and wait your turn. It is somewhat difficult? YES, but is it impossible? NO.
