I am 22 years old and just entered the full-time, white collar workforce after graduating from college. I am working as an administrative assistant for a small NPO, and by small I mean a staff of only ten or so people. I have been contemplating asking our President for a change in my title, so instead of “administrative assistant” I would be along the lines of “marketing/public relations/sales assistant”. I report directly to the director of sales and marketing, and I basically do anything I can to help out anyone in all of our “departments”, but my degree and primary interest is in marketing and PR. I do not want an increase in pay, I just feel like having the administrative assistant title on my resume is selling my skills short and sort of placing me in a box for future administrative positions, which is not where I want to be. Is it unheard of to ask for a change in title? Do you think it would be appropriate in this case? Thanks in advance!
